Decisions, Decisions, In Mass Effect

This is it! One of the biggest, if not the biggest, game this year released today! Commander Shepard has been fighting and warning everyone about the impending doom of the Reapers since 2007. Everything leads up to this conclusion. The story, acting, graphics everything is top-notch but there is one unique factor that makes this game different from others – it is the power of choice.

Every decision made from the previous titles matters some with great outcomes some with large consequences. Mass Effect is “your” game. From choosing Commander Shepard’s sex, race, class, background information and love interest – everything is counting on your actions. Who lives, who dies, what races survives, who are your allies? Though, this isn’t a new formula in games Mass Effect stands out because of the scale of the decisions as they continue into the next installment. Remember the Rachni Queen that promised she wasn’t violent and pledge to help Shepard fight the coming darkness in Mass Effect 2? What happened to the heretic Geth? Everything that goes around comes around and you’ll see the result that you chose. With that angle of choice, it will pull the gamer more into the plot and have them sympathize with the characters.

One of the co-founders of Bioware, Dr. Ray Muzyka, told Gamespot about open possibilities, though the topic was a future Mass Effect MMO, the open world evolving the gamer still stands.

“When you deliver a game, and you deliver it for a player, you have to capture what they think is the possibility space,” he said. “You need to let them do everything they think they should do, and you can’t block them from doing anything they think they should be able to do. You have to nail all the features and content that should be in that possibility space.”

It also helps replay value like no other. Gamers will replay the entire game to make different decisions for different results or purchase the last two copies so that they won’t rely on the default events. But that’s just one aspect out of several in this crazy story-driven-action-adventure-RPG series.
